PhoenixMUD is a text game. This page says what it keeps about you, where, and why. It covers the game server, the browser client and the phone apps, which are the same client in a native shell.

Your account

  • A character has a name and a password. The password is stored as a salted scrypt hash, never in clear. There is no email address.
  • The address you connect from is kept with the character and in the server's logs, as every MUD since 1990 has done, so that abuse can be traced.

Playing

  • Everything that makes up a character is saved: level, class, equipment, gold, skills, where you are, who you have mailed and what you wrote them, your aliases and settings.
  • What you say on a channel, or to the room, is seen by the players there and by staff. Tells go to the player you name.
  • The commands you type are recorded in gameplay journals. They are used to check the new server against the original one, line by line, and to find bugs. Staff read them for that and nothing else.
  • A bug report you file with the bug command takes your room, your last twenty commands, your inventory and your vitals with it, so the defect can be reproduced.

The client and the apps

  • The browser client keeps your layout, map settings and session in the browser's own storage. It leaves your device only as game commands to the server.
  • The Android and iOS apps load that same client. They add a splash screen, the status bar, the keyboard and the screen staying on while you play. No advertising identifier, no analytics, no tracking library, no third-party SDK beyond those.
  • The site and the client carry no advertising and no analytics.

Sharing

Nothing is sold and nothing is given to anyone. The game runs on a rented server; its provider sees traffic the way any host does. The who list and the leaderboards on this site show character names and levels, as the game's own who command does.

Keeping and deleting

A character is kept until you delete it. The login menu has a delete entry, and it is gone when you confirm. Journals and logs are kept by the operator for the time they are useful to the work above, then dropped. Ask on Discord and the operator will remove what you want removed.

Contact

Questions go to the Discord. The game is not directed at children under 13.
