The heavy shovel does the chore of digging, if nearly being a chore in itself.  The shovel is a complicated contraption of gnomish design obviously, disconnecting in two places, and folding in as many more for "easy" storage capability.  For those who can fold the thing out in the first place, the hefty weight is the strongest drawback.
