These mittens are made from a thin and supple layer of leather.  Human hands can barely squeeze into them.  The mittens are used by Shaolin students when training in open hand attacks.  By pressing the fingers together, they force each finger to support the others, reducing the risk of bone fractures. The mittens are quickly discarded as monks gain more experience.
