Above the clay vessel, a bamboo pipe leads down from a hole in the ceiling. On rainy days it diverts water from the gutters to drop into the vessel. Water falls out the vessel's hole and into a funnel and a second bamboo pipe below.  The pipe then diverts this 'vengeance waterfall' through the wall to drain outside the temple.  The sound of the flowing water is quite soothing.
