The gong is a bronze plate, only about the size of a tea saucer.  It is suspended by two short chains from a wooden dowel which acts as a handle. Attached by a longer chain to the dowel is a small drum stick, padded in lamb's wool.  The gong makes a high-pitched reverberation when struck, which causes a tingling sensation in everyone standing nearby.
