The time of the Dark years was harsh on the land of the Phoenix.  She had been impregnated with the spirit of an evil god and had turned mad.  She slaughtered her followers in their thousands.  The city of Atlantis feared the Dark Phoenix and searched for a solution to hide the city.  A wizard came forward and explained he could protect the Atlantean race by submerging it under the deepest ocean.  The council agreed after a long time of contemplation and the wizard sank the city to preserve it from the Dark Phoenix.  Unfortunately the wizard was trapped on the surface, and was thought to have died at the hands of the evil forces.  For years afterwards some spellcasters in the city worked to create a time portal that would take anyone back in time to the dark times.  They succeeded but the strain was too great and they all perished, leaving no way of opening the portal.  However, there is a Legend that says that the mages left their secrets somewhere in the city, written down to assist their descendants open the portal.
