This large tooth appears to be the very tip of an elephant's tusk.  Some master carver has delicately embedded the image of a Phoenix into the handle, with its legs stretching down the blade.  The sharp looking claws on the legs meet at the tip of the tooth and flames erupt from the tip back up the blade.
