The shield of Hephaestus was a special gift granted by the immortals to one who dedicated his life to serving their cause.  The glow of goodness surrounds the shield, giving it a blue color.  Upon furhter inspection, the metal of the shield is found to have a blue luster of its own, perhaps cobalt or some other mineral has been added to the steel.  The shield bares the crest of its owner, and taking it from him would mean bringing the wrath of the gods down on all who wear it.
