Indeed, upon closer inspection, it is clear someone has carved a few words
into the very bark.  They say:

Above lies the Plains
  and Tundra.
We seek the wizard
  of Ice and Snow.

An ugly thing, all twisted and its roots scrambling across the loose rock in search of soil and moisture.  The bark has been picked at as well, perhaps by woodpeckers, perhaps by other creatures.  Near the base something appears to be scribbled or carved into the wood.  A few cones rest overhead, just out of reach.
