a weathered journal

Stuck in the coral is a book with a worn leather cover.

look book

A brown leather covered journal is in remarkably good shape despite the fact it has been stuck on a reef for who knows how long. Perhaps it is enchanted. Scribed onto the cover is the name Captain James Damon. Flipping to the first page, a table of content lists: Intro, Habitats, and Dangers. The hemp pages are legible if one wanted to look at these sections.

look Intro

These are possibly the last words of Captain James Damon. My ship, The Lucid Lady, has been destroyed upon the reefs before this accursed land. Most of my mates had survived the wreck only to die at the hands of the bizarre inhabitants of this hellish place. I have sent my first mate overland in hopes he can reach others and warn them of this land. I have detailed my experiences here in two chapters in hopes of helping anyone unlucky enough to find this journal. The people of this land are almost all faeries. Yes faeries, and yes dangerous. You may wonder how an ankle high being may be dangerous. Well let me dispel that myth. Faeries seem to have the ability to mate with any species they choose including man and plants. They are tricky and mischievous at best, downright deadly at worst. I have found only one species that is not faerie here, the Mujarib. These humanoid folks are incredibly adept at camouflage, which, I guess is why they still survive here. If you are in danger, you may find sanctuary in their homes. There is a government here. A chaotic and highly diverse group of faeries who have, for their own safety, divided the land into evil and non-evil. Do not feel safe because you are not among the evil, this I warn you. The land closest to you is the safest, tread cautiously. The truly dangerous place has warning signs. Keep your eyes open!

look Habitats

The reefs house some unsavory creatures that do not care for visitors. Inland, the forest is home to a variety of habitats. Some of the larger trees are home to various species in the branches. Some groves of trees are not actually trees but treants, and not your household variety at that. Some trees are carnivorous so tread wearily. Clearings in the woods are often gathering places for merrymaking. Although entertaining, DO NOT drink or eat any faerie food. Marshlands are not safe, as if anywhere is. There are also a variety of caverns and tunnels one should walk cautiously through. All who have traveled onto the evil side are dead so I am unable to detail what habitats may be found there.

look Dangers

Faeries are infamous for trickery and mischievous actions. An example or two of what to be aware of would be prudent. My cabin boy had his bootlaces tied together by a little pixie. He tripped and broke his neck on a pile of rocks (which housed a very angry brownie that threw acorns at us for 2 days! ). Another pixie replaced one of our slaves water with milk. He was allergic to milk and died. Oh these are little dangers but deadly none the less. You have been warned. Some of the carnivorous trees have lassos and nooses, which dangle quite a distance from the tree. Digestion by tree is not recommended. Faerie food and drink is poisonous and dancing with the faeries may cause one to be charmed and unable to stop dancing. Be cautious. If one should come across a faerie ring of mushrooms, do not enter the ring. You will be transported to the faerie queen herself and have one hell of a time until you die of dehydration and starvation. The only way out is to be summoned, so be careful. Willow-of the -wisps can not hurt you really, but they will lure you into the swamps and marshes to places where you will be hurt. For your own sake, just let them be. There are more dangers; these are just the ones I have encountered. If you are stupid enough to go to the evil side, I have heard of faerie swarms which will carry you off and tear you to shreds. I wish you much luck at getting out of here, this walled in hell I call Damon's Gorge.
