A set of panpipes is strung together with some twine.  The pipes, each a little shorter than the previous, are made of a hollow wooden reed.  Blowing across the open top end of a reed creates a resonating tonal sound.  The top of the pipes are evenly lined up, while the uneven bottoms are plugged with clay.
