The short sword was forged of iron and has been finished only recently.  A skilled smith obviously forged the sword, but unfortunately the metals he was forced to work with were very poor.  The hilt of the sword is of the same poor quality iron, and then covered with some animal skin to make handling easier. Even with careful use, most likely it will not last long.
