A case much larger than needed, and compartmented to hold a variety of instruments and objects that a bard or bard in training could find useful. Hard, dried leather forms the cases underbase, but this is softened by soft, brushed black leather or doe-hide, giving the case a feel of almost velvet to the touch.  A braided black cord is laced into the seams at the cases edges, to allow it to be easily slipped over a shoulder for travel.
