The altar is made of pitch black obsidian and is formed into a large coffin.  The coffin seems to radiate evil and darkness in equal portions, giving the whole room a harsh flavor of tension and expectation.  Large grooves have been cut into the surface of the coffin lid and they angle in a downward slant to a hole in the head portion of the coffin.
