the ships log

A small log, bound in leather, has been left here.

look Last

The page reads, in a shaking and weak writing:

The 1st Day of The Greater Gods, in the Month of The Great Struggle.

This is possibly my last entry, perhaps for good, but certainly from the Maid,
as I intend to abandon her. I will take only the basic necessities with me to the
island - but I'm getting ahead of myself in my rush to leave this unlucky ship.
Most of the crew has died horrible and inexplicable deaths during the last two
nights. It didn't take long before we discovered Limps and Ingo, our cook.
We found them in the cargo hold while feasting on our poor young deck boy. They
had been turned to zombies by the curse of the wizard, and still they walk the
deck of this ship. We were able to contain them in the cargo until more sailors
died mysterious deaths and they too rose as mindless undead.
As the situation got out of hand rather quickly we found ourselves suddenly
adrift, and before we could make full corrections we had beached on this island.
Without those frenzied last corrections to our course, the ship would have been
minced to tiny bits in the reefs surrounding the isle, of that I'm sure.
I start to think that it might have been for the best after all...
The young girl, who, I presume, is the courier of the order of the wizard,
is still alive and well, protected by her guard and the remaining crew.
Pray! Take heed of my words, the nature of the madcap is diabolic! The
conditions under which I became involved with him... with it, is too horrid a tale
to repeat here, but I tell you this: I shall be a very happy man indeed, if I
never see that abomination again.
Well, I have already ordered my First Mate and the remaining survivors into the
long boat. Hopefully, they will wait by the stern as I instructed them to - I
intend to dart from here and straight over the bulwark, as I can hear them just
outside my door. But the zombies are slow and stupid - I think I can make it!

I must go to meet my destiny, be it salvation or damnation!

                                                         Castan Ginstubb Laskin,
Former Captain of the Alluring Mermaid.

look Page

The page reads, in a thick but somewhat insecure style:

The 1st Day of Thunder, in the Month of The Great Struggle.

Well, the jokes about the fleeing rats have come to an end. They are all gone
now, I can't imagine to where, as they would surely die from exhaustion before
reaching the shore.
But recent events has led some people to whisper of the wizard, that his curse
might be very real, and that we should return to appease his anger. This, however,
is a luxury I cannot afford, I have a business to attend to and can't go around
apologizing to every madcap wizard on the way - and that's most every wizard, I'll
have you know!
The event of which I hesitate to speak, is the death and disappearance of our
good man Lettgor 'Limps' Eakbor.
He died immediately as a stack of barrels fell on him and cracked open his head.
This is life onboard, it has never been safe. The strange and unnerving part is
the disappearance of his corpse. He was put in the cargo hold under some
blankets until we could pass him over to his watery grave, but as we go to fetch
his remains, we discover them gone!
Now, not even an hour ago, our cook has joined poor Limps in the afterlife.
He suffocated in a piece of bird, we believe - just started choking all of the
sudden, and it didn't stop until he stopped trying to breathe.
I went to check on his body before I returned to update the log, but that too has
disappeared it seems.
Myself, I'm beginning to wonder if the wisdom of Erasmus has somehow lost its
potency. Indeed, I fear for my life and that of the crew.

The page reads, in a thick and hardly intelligible handwriting:

The 3rd Day of the Bull, in the Month of The Old Forces.

We are still stuck by this accursed tower, and I don't like it one bit more
than lukewarm beer! But, to everyone's deep relief, we are loading the last
supplies as I write this. By the Phoenix, we shall be out of here very soon!
The wizard has kept us waiting for his arrival for more than a week, and when
he does show up, he has the nerve to demand his order without charge. HA! I still
laugh at his bewildered look when he discovered that his magic didn't work on me.
I pray for your soul still, dear Erasmus, your lectures have proved to be priceless.
The silly egghead flew into a veritable rampage, knocking down innocent people
and flinging spells about. Though no-one was hurt, thanks to a freak stroke of luck,
I was rather upset at his reaction - I think he is certainly capable of employing
dirty tricks, and worse still...
Before he left, he stared at the ship, a wind blew up and he exclaimed these
words in a booming voice:

'Beware this ship and the Master who Commands it!
He has refused to fulfill his end of a pact, and for this he, and everyone
with him, shall suffer dearly. Even in death, they shall not cease to pay for
    their insolence.
    I mote it so!'

He then proceeded to slash open his own left palm and fling a trail of blood
against the hull of my ship. It is still there, we can't seem to get rid of it,
even with our shipwrights plane...

look Log

This is the log of The Alluring Mermaid, and as regulations prescribe, it was kept by the captain himself. The leather cover of the book has some peculiar flaps, extensions of the binding, which allow for leather strings to be wrought tightly around the book and its properly folded flaps, making it resistant to water, at least for a little while longer. After filing through the pages, skimming the content judiciously, you find three pages of interest, Page Thirty-nine (Bull), Page Forty-two (Thunder) and the very last page (Great Gods).
