You can't see a thing through the waters, but it feels like it's made from wood with iron reinforcements at exposed corners and edges.  These iron parts feels rough, even sharp, as the rusting iron is flaking away into nothingness. The glimmer must have come from a part of the iron, which has somehow been scraped clean of rust, leaving open the reflective iron.  The commotion of the examination causes the lid to slide off, then gently drop to the deck.
