Softwood may account for the immense amount of damage this musical instrument has obtained; however, environmental conditions most likely were the main factor.  Claw marks, burns, chips and teeth marks cover the bulk of the surface of the recorder.  The hollow instrument is caked with dry saliva and one of the pitch holes is crusted over with a nasty membranous film.  Its tonal quality is off pitch and windy, worthy of a trashcan or a burn pile.
