A leather string has been looped through a hole in the wooden handle of this cast iron potato masher.  Two slender rods of iron fit snuggly into the handle and are securely fastened to a circular masher with waffled pattern. Although it may be useful in a fight and worn around the waist in anticipation of such an event, its true utility will be found in the kitchen.
