The blind Javelin Master stands square to the target.

The Javelin Master's eyes are clouded over so that there is nothing but white where the pupils should be.
     His student, pitying him, says, "Of all things, to live in darkness must be the worst."
     "Fear is the only darkness", he replies.  "Never assume that because a man has no eyes he can not see.  Wear this blindfold.  What do you hear?"
     "I hear flowing water and the footsteps of other students."
     "Do you hear your own heartbeat?  Do you hear the rustling of the straw behind the target?"
     The student says, "I do not."  He takes the blindfold off and notices, for the first time, the straw rustling slightly in a breeze from the drafty roof.  "Old man, how is it that you hear these things?"
     "Young man, how is it that you do not?"
