a jewel beetle

A coppery jewel beetle roams the jungle.

The jewel beetle is three feet long, with a metallic coppery exoskeleton and a glossy black head.  Its long antennae probe ahead, for the creature is nearly blind.  It seems fond of tree bark and takes chunks out of each tree it passes, tasting each one as it searches for its favorite.
