a blackbird

A small blackbird begins to fly away at your approach.

This blackbird is covered with coal black feathers, so black that they look as if they have been tinted with midnight blue, the blackness is only broken by the stripe of red he sports along the edge of each wing.  He uses his beady eyes to watch for dangers that might approach and if he feels threatened he will hop away, fly off, and emit a shrill squawk of annoyance for being disturbed.
