a spiny rock dragon

A spiny lizard of unusual size watches languidly from its perch on the rocks.

The lizard is a bit over three feet long, with a running crest of long, sharp spines running the length of its back from neck to tail.  It's greenish-brown color matches the surrounding rocks quite well, and it is camouflaged even resting on bare ground.  At the moment it is perched precariously nearly sideways along one of the many massive jagged rocks of the grottos.
