a magnificent frigatebird

A magnificent frigatebird circles above a school of fish.

With slow deep wingbeats, this distinctive aerial pirate endlessly soars high over the water, never landing on its surface.  Generally silent away from its colony, the male, famous for its mating display of its red puffed throat sack, circles overhead looking for fish to pluck from the water or to steal from other seabirds.  Its deeply forked tail is usually closed.  Its sharply bent wings are distinctive in the sky.  The black and gray shading of its body is drab and unbroken except for the red throat sack and a white diamond on its strong bony chest.
