A snarling dire wolf, the alpha male, guards the northern caves.

A guttural growl issues from the massive throat of the lead dire wolf. The thick, grey coat of the beast is dirty and matted.  Its owner is clearly not big on grooming.  A thick line of drool hangs from the dire wolf's sagging jowls.  He crouches low, baring his fangs.
