Only in the UnderDark do such enormous and evolved fungi grow.  Shriekers are a family of mushroom, so named due to their ability to emit a high pitched, ear splitting screech when threatened.  Drow elves use their magic to control Shriekers and use them as alarm systems for their cavernous compounds. Should an enemy approach, the grove of shriekers would immediately cry out, alerting all of the impending danger.
