a vice-claw hawk

A large hawk circles the valley looking for easy prey.

The most distinguishing feature of the hawk is not its pearl-gray feathers or sharp beak; it is the extraordinarily thick, large claws.  Designed to perch and hunt within the nooks and crannies of the mountains, the hawk has adapted a grip which seems to clamp against the side of its prey instead of wrapping around from the top of the animal.
