Generally, dwarves are a very strong race; however, in rare cases some of the children are born early and do not fully develop to normal strength. These children cannot work the mines, but will often find another means of being useful to the settlement.  Some, like this young man, focus on geological studies and plan the tunnels and routes for the miners.
