A translucent ghost rushes at you with non-existent feet.

The ghost is clearly that of a sailor - with thick earrings, bandanna and high stockings - and isn't that the distinction of an accomplished helmsman? Without effort it glides silently towards you, and at closer range you notice a mortal wound in his throat.  A nice clean slicing of the throat has killed this sailor.  It was expertly done, or executed to his surprise, leaving no time to struggle.
