Barely visible beneath a dead leaf, a strange beetle widens its jaws in defense.

Dark brown, light brown and dull purple blotches cover the hard, gnarled back of this carrion eater and blend almost perfectly into the detritus it usually resides in.  Spindly, jet black legs support the flesh bloated body and secrete an unwholesome odor similar to rotten cabbage mixed with burning hair.  Twin pincers, each easily a full inch long, clack menacingly as it stares at you unblinking with bright orange, beady little eyes.  Each clack is accompanied by a startling orange flash as it momentarily flexes its carapace to reveal the brilliant orange wings beneath as if in warning.
