An army ant soldier, jaws agape, guards the sides of the ant trail.

Ants in the soldier caste are inflated versions of their worker cousins. Their huge, curving mandibles are kept wide open, ready to bite anyone that crosses the busy line of passing workers.  Worse still, the soldiers can also sting with their back ends, injecting an irritating compound of formic acid.
