a tiny carrion beetle

A tiny carrion beetle tries to hide out of sight among the bramble.

Dark brown, light brown and dull purple blotches cover the hard, gnarled back of this tiny carrion eater and blend almost perfectly into the detritus it usually resides in.  Spindly, jet black legs support the flesh bloated body and secrete an unwholesome odor similar to rotten cabbage mixed with burning hair.  Twin pincers, each a half inch long, clack menacingly as it stares at you unblinking with bright orange, beady little eyes.  Each clack is accompanied by a startling orange flash as it momentarily flexes its carapace to reveal the brilliant orange wings beneath as if in warning.
