an ankheg
A ten-foot long, mantis-like bug digs out from beneath the ground to ambush you.
The ankheg is a giant burrowing insect, with an endless appetite. Its armor is brown and thorny, with a black hook on the end of each of its six legs. Its favorite tactic is to wait just beneath the soil in its burrow until it feels the vibration of passing prey. Then it digs out with surprising speed to ambush from below. Nothing can deter it from a fight to the death.
