A red mass of algae floats on the water surface.

A large clump of red algae bubbles gently as it devours the leaves off a tree limb with its digestive acids.  As bubbles emerge from within the algae mass, dangling fronds become visible.  Possibly the fronds can be used to latch onto items below the surface like fish, dead leaves, legs.  The density of the algae is not apparent, though only 4 feet across at the water surface, it may be iceberg-like, and much bigger below the surface.
