a basilisk guardian

A huge eight legged lizard blocks the exit.

The eight legged reptile stands solid as stone, motionless, staring through membrane covered eyes.  Only under careful observation can one see its claw twitch in anticipation upon its long hafted halberd.  Four legs placed firmly in front of the door, its long ashen tail, powerful and rough, curls slightly at the tip where it lays several feet off the ground, pressed against the doorframe.  Moisture drips regularly from between its nostrils and teeth, all along the elongated snout.  The skin pulled taught at the throat moves slightly as the creature swallows, its adams apple visible, a possible weak spot.
