A bard is here, crying and drinking himself into oblivion.

You can smell the alcohol on his breath from clear across the room.  This poor man has apparently been sitting here for quite some time.  Every once in a while he glances up at the picture on the mantle above the fireplace, and heaves a great, shuddering sigh.
