A blob of black muck has been left behind.

Pieces of twigs and a few leaves have been pressed with mud from the marsh and formed into a slightly dripping mass.  Something firmer is behind the surface muck, but buried for so long in it, it has become permanently stained and impregnated with it.  After it dries, it's much less smelly, but with any rain storm, that wonderful marsh odor comes back.
