The book was once a very thick and ornately covered volume.  Now, after some tragic and devastating fire, there is only an ash-covered binding and a few burnt remains of paper.  A few cryptic words can be found on a few of the scraps still attached to the tome; however, it is difficult reading.  Any text that could be made out would be worthless without any context or knowledge of what the book was originally about.
