A pair of canvas sleeves is actually a single piece of cloth cut to go over the head and tied around the underside of the arm with hemp twine.  The old brown canvas has been stained and dirties with time.  Several sharp tears have been rent through the protective covering.  The size and proximity to one another of the tears suggests the damage was caused by a sharp taloned bird.
