The black silk sash, or obi, is broad but delicate.  It is usually tied around the waist so that both ends drape down along one leg.  Imbued with a bit of Shaolin mysticism, this sash helps one keep his center of balance when fighting, allowing him to strike more true and avoid attacks a bit better.
