The jald is the chieftain of a quaggoth tribe.  He is responsible for the care, feeding, and protection of his subjects.  A quaggoth does not rise to the position of jald by chance or luck.  They are usually the largest, strongest, meanest, and smartest of the entire tribe.  This one certainly seems to meet all of those attributes.
